Weekend 6 of Transformative Coaching Essentials: Purpose, Vision, and Motivation

This weekend marked weekend 6 (of 12!) in our Transformative Coaching Essentials program. As always, the weekend was packed with learning, exploration, and reflection, but there were a few highlights that truly stood out. From student-led book reports to deep dives into purpose and vision, we explored some powerful tools that are foundational to transformative coaching. Let’s take a look at what we covered and how these concepts will continue to guide us on our coaching journeys.

A Student-Led Book Report on Martha Beck’s Steering by Starlight

We kicked off the weekend with a unique and engaging student-led book report on Martha Beck’s Steering by Starlight. This book, which is a staple for anyone interested in personal transformation, offers profound insights into how to navigate life with purpose and clarity. It was educational to see our student coaches lead the discussion, offering their perspective on Beck’s tools and how they can be applied in both our personal lives and as future coaches.

The student-led format was a refreshing approach and included props, activities and other creative and innovative ways to teach the tools. It also created a collaborative learning environment, where we could engage in lively conversations and share insights. The key takeaway from the report was the idea that Beck’s “starlight” can serve as a guiding force—much like the way we, as coaches, aim to help clients find their guiding purpose in life.

Purpose: The Heart of Motivation

Next, we dove deep into the concept of purpose and how it directly fuels motivation. One of the core principles we discussed was that knowing your purpose is often the missing link when it comes to staying motivated and aligned with your goals. Purpose, in this context, is not just a vague concept or an abstract idea. It’s a powerful internal compass that helps us stay on track, even in the face of challenges or distractions.

When we have clarity around our purpose, we naturally become more energized and focused. It gives us a reason to push forward, to work through obstacles, and to continue progressing toward our goals. This idea of purpose-driven motivation isn’t just theoretical—it’s something we can all experience when we take the time to really tune into what drives us at a deep, soul level. For coaches, helping clients uncover their purpose can be one of the most impactful transformations we facilitate.

Vision: The Dreamy Pull

Building on the concept of purpose, we then explored the idea of vision. While purpose is often described as the motor that drives us forward, vision has a different quality—it’s the force that pulls us toward the future. Vision is connected to our purpose but has a more dreamy, expansive quality. Where purpose might feel like a tangible, actionable goal, vision can feel more ethereal, inspiring us to dream big and stretch our thinking.

Vision is the motivating force that comes into play once we know our purpose. It’s what helps us see the bigger picture, to visualize the life we want to create. As we discussed in our session, vision often emerges from purpose. When we understand what we’re meant to do, our vision begins to take shape around that understanding, helping us map out the possibilities for our future. Vision fuels creativity, innovation, and long-term motivation in a way that purpose alone cannot.

The Unbeatable Combination of Purpose and Vision

The final lesson of the weekend was perhaps the most powerful: Purpose and vision together form an unbeatable combination. Purpose provides the inner drive, like the engine of a car, pushing us to take action, even when it feels difficult. It’s what keeps us going when the going gets tough. Vision, on the other hand, acts like a magnet, pulling us toward a future that feels expansive and exciting. Together, these two forces create a dynamic, unstoppable momentum.

As coaches, understanding this synergy between purpose and vision is essential. It allows us to help clients not only discover their purpose but also create a compelling vision that pulls them toward their fullest potential. When clients align both, they experience a sense of harmony and drive that propels them forward with clarity and excitement.

In conclusion, Weekend 6 of Transformative Coaching Essentials was a rich exploration of purpose, vision, and motivation. We left the weekend not only with a deeper understanding of these concepts but also with new tools to apply them in both our own lives and as we support our clients. Purpose gives us the energy to move forward, vision pulls us toward the future, and together they create a potent combination that makes everything feel possible.
