Styles of Communication…and a Quote

“The effectiveness of communication is not defined by the communication, but by the response.” –Milton Erickson

What does this mean?  So often we think that if we are “being clear” everyone should understand.  We put together our communication in such a way that we feel we are doing a good job because of the nature of the communication – the words we say, how we say them, the content, etc.  What Erickson is saying is that the test of whether we are truly communicating effectively is on the other side of the communication.  If the other person does not understand, we have not been effective.

Next week, if you are in Sacramento, you will have the opportunity to learn how to do this well – how to support other people in understanding you.

I will teach you a tool that includes four different communication styles. We will learn about non-verbal communication. You will learn that you are ALWAYS communicating non-verbally and you will learn WHAT you are communicating non-verbally (it is not what you think!) and how to communicate in a way that comes across more clearly and in line with what you want to say. You will learn to identify other people’s styles and how to speak to each style.
