What We Did at Coach Training Weekend 7

On February 15, we had the great honor of being with our new coaches for the 7th weekend of Transformative Coaching Essentials. This weekend was a deep dive into some of the most powerful tools we as coaches can use to help clients break through barriers and create real change.

This weekend, we explored Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), a fascinating approach to understanding how language and thought patterns shape our reality. Beyond learning techniques, we also uncovered some of the biggest barriers that keep people stuck—and how we, as coaches, can help them move forward.

Diving into NLP

If you’ve never encountered Neuro-Linguistic Programming, think of it as a way to understand how we process the world and how small shifts in thinking can create big changes in results. The idea is simple: our thoughts, words, and behaviors are all connected, and when we learn to reframe or “reprogram” certain patterns, we can open new doors to success.

One of the most eye-opening aspects of NLP is how each person experiences the world through their own internal map of reality—and that map is shaped by their language, perceptions, and past experiences. As coaches, recognizing this helps us build trust, deepen our understanding, and facilitate clients in moving toward their goals in a way that truly resonates with them.

We practiced key NLP techniques, like anchoring (creating positive emotional triggers), reframing (shifting perspectives on challenges), and visualization (mentally rehearsing success). Each of these tools can be a game-changer for clients who feel stuck in limiting beliefs.

Breaking Through Barriers

While NLP provided powerful techniques, perhaps the most impactful part of the weekend was our deep dive into the barriers that hold people back.

One major barrier we call Explanation: the tendency to explain and tell a story about why we have a particular result. When we do this, we are more focused on justifying past failures than on learning and moving forward. Consider this common example: “I was late because traffic was bad.” While that may be true, focusing on the story of the external circumstances keeps us stuck. A more powerful shift is in asking: “What can I do differently in the future to get there on time?” This change in thinking (and speaking) moves us from storytelling to examining what we can actually control – ourselves – and is far more likely to get us what we want.

Another barrier is called Regret. When this barrier appears, we are dwelling on what could have been, replaying missed opportunities like a mental highlight reel. But living in the past keeps us from seeing the opportunities right in front of us. As coaches, our role is to help clients acknowledge the past, learn from it, and then shift focus to what they can do now to create the future they want.

And then there’s Judgment—of others, of situations, and especially of ourselves. Judgment keeps us trapped in resistance instead of action. The more we judge, the harder it is to see possibilities. Our challenge as coaches is to help clients let go of that mental roadblock so they can focus on what they truly want.

Moving Forward

Weekend 7 wasn’t just about learning NLP techniques; it was about applying them—first to ourselves, then to others. Coaching isn’t about having the answers. It’s about helping people move through their internal barriers so they can find their power and their own answers.

With these new insights, we are better equipped to guide our clients toward real, lasting change. And that’s what transformative coaching is all about—helping people see new possibilities, step into their potential, and create the results they truly desire.
